Sport and Leisure

Sport plays an important part in the social life of residents of Peterlee.   The Town and surrounding area is well represented not only in the traditional sports such as football, cricket, golf, bowls, rugby and swimming, but in more modern activities such as roller blade hockey.

Leisure Centre

The Leisure centre offers a wide spectrum of sports, fitness and leisure activities including 2 pools.

East Durham and Houghall Community College

East Durham and Houghall Community College  make available to some extent sports facilities including floodlit facilities and have National Academy Status in Male and Female Rugby Union, Football, Basket ball and an International Boxing Academy for those wishing to pursue a career in sport.  www.edhcc.ac.uk   tel: (0191) 5182000

Cricket and Football

Peterlee also has its own cricket  field which is situated at Helford Road. Adjacent to the field is Helford Road Sports and Social Club, you can contact the Chairman, Brian Joyce on 5860304.

The local Football Club is located at the football grounds, Eden Lane.

Golf

The nearest golf course is at Castle Eden, approximately 2 miles south of the Town, just off the A19 at the junction A181. Castle Eden village offers a beautiful 18 hole course for members and non-members alike, in a picturesque setting.  You can contact the Secretary of the Golf Club on (01429) 836510.

Rugby

Other groups

The Town also boasts a wealth of leisure groups and organizations including for example Leisure Gardeners Association, Skateboard Group, Camcorder Club, Jazz Band, Youth Club, Flower Clubs etc.

Town Council Sporting Facilities

The Town Council has three large recreational areas at Eden Lane, Lowhills Road and Helford Road. These facilities have been substantially upgraded and extended in recent years to provide some of the best outside sports /changing facilities in the area. It has only been through partnership working that we have been able to achieve such major improvements in a relatively short period of time. The Town Council has recently been successful in obtaining a grant of £73,000 from the New Opportunities Fund to create a new additional football field at Lowhills Road, and we are concluding negotiations with a private company to provide additional football field, kick about pitch and changing accommodation at Eden Lane.

The Town Council currently provides the following sporting facilities:

Lowhills Road

  • 5 No Football Fields including upgraded Changing and Shower Facilities
  • 1 No Bowling Green and Pavilion
  • 1 No Informal Kick about Football Pitch

Eden Lane

  • 2 No Football Fields (1 floodlit) to Northern League standard including upgraded changing and shower facilities including Canteen area.
  • 1 No Football Training Pitch
  • 1 No Whippet Track
  • 4 No Tennis Courts
  • 1 No Bowling  Green & Pavilion

Helford Road

  • 3 No Football  Fields including Changing & Shower Facilities
  • 1 No Cricket  Ground
  • 1 No Training Area

Multi Use Games Arena, Helford Road

The new Floodlit Generation 3 Training facility at Helford Road is now available for hire between 9.00am and 9.00pm every day other than Christmas Day.

Hire for a 55 minute session is £30.00 + VAT for adult teams, £15.00 + VAT for teams aged 16 years and under.

This facility was provided by the Town Council with financial assistance from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Sport England - CCDP (Rugby League) and CIF Funds and the Football Foundation.

Leisure Gardens

In addition to sports facilities, the Town Council also provide leisure gardens at Thorntree Gill (17 plots) and Lowhills Road (49 plots). These gardens are managed on behalf of Peterlee Town Council by Peterlee Leisure Gardens Association.
