Woodhouse Park play area

Parks, Open Spaces and Play Areas

Open spaces were high on the agenda when the initial design of Peterlee was under discussion and implementation.  You will notice to this day the large amount of green areas between housing estates and the town centre.

When the Peterlee Development Corporation demised in 1988, this land transferred to both the District of Easington and the Town Council.  The Town Council alone maintains over 400 acres of land.

Woodhouse Park

A 12 acre area situated off Balliol Close, with ample parking, toilet & picnic facilities, Woodhouse Park was created to mark the 50th Anniversary of the designation of the Town.    The name Woodhouse Park is in recognition of the lengthy service to Peterlee by Canon K. I. Woodhouse, Vicar to St. Cuthberts Church.  The Park has been developed in partnership with the District and County Councils, English Partnerships (formally the New Towns Commission) and other local organisations, it offers many facilities including a pavilion, 2 play areas, multi use sports facility and community garden. During the development phases of the Park, a multi use youth sports facility was created in 2003 and a small community building created with help from Durham County Council.

Play Areas

During the last 5 years, working in partnership with Peterlee Surestart Project, we have established new play areas in the town and upgraded the play area at Eden Lane.  Since 1997 over £370,000 has been spent on play areas alone.  We have achieved our aim to provide a play area in each Ward of the town.

Play Areas in the Town are situated as follows:
Heath Close
Hampshire Place
Eden Lane
Helford Road
Hill Rigg House (Lowhills Road)
Woodhouse Park
