Peterlee lies within the Administrative County of Durham. Durham County Council is the Principal Authority for the area and its offices are based at County Hall, Durham. (Tel: 0300 123 7070). It provides the majority of local authority services in County Durham and works with a range of partners to provide services to the public.

From 1 April, 2009, the District of Easington Council ceased to exist, with many of the services previously being provided by that Council now being carried out by Durham County Council through the involvement of 'Area Action Partnerships'. Peterlee Town Council's role within Local Government remains unchanged.

Area Action Partnerships involve partners of DCC, local people and organisations in the council's work, to allow various public, voluntary and community organisations as well as individuals to have a say in how local services are provided to their area. The local AAP for the Peterlee area is the East Durham APP and you can find out more about their work on their website (link to east durham aap webpage) or via their facebook page here:  Facebook
