The Town Council elects a Chairman in May every year at the Annual General Meeting. The Chairman can be a man or a woman, but the title of ‘Chairman’ remains the same (it’s a peculiarity of UK law!). The Chairman of the Town Council is able to take the title of Town Mayor, and may serve as Town Mayor for as long as they are the Chairman of the Council.
The Town Mayor acts as the figurehead of the Council and represents the town at public events throughout the area. In addition to representing the town, the Mayor also raises money for local charities during their year of office.

The Mayor of Peterlee, Rob Moore
Mayor – Councillor Rob Moore
My name is Rob Moore, I am your town councillor for Howletch ward and have lived in Peterlee since 1994.
I grew up and was educated in Lancashire and Merseyside, before joining the Army in 1984, where I served for almost 10 years in the Royal Corps of Signals, I deployed to the Gulf in 1990 as part of 1st Armoured Division, I am very proud to have served my country, just as my father had done during WWII through to the 1960’s and Have 2 brothers that also served.
I founded East Durham Veterans Breakfast Club in 2016 which now has a membership of almost 300 veterans, and I am also Secretary/Treasurer of the local branch Royal Signals Association.
For the past few years, I have had the honour of parade marshall for the annual remembrance day parade.
Prior to being elected to council, I worked in the HGV industry and Taxi trade for about 16 years, before getting a job at EDS which then became Hewlett Packard.
Hobbies include watching documentaries, web research, building computers and my cockapoo Ruby.
I became involved in local politics about 5 years ago and wanting to give something back to the town, I decided to run for council and here I am.
